النكهة:

On the dry aroma, Front Street detected sweet and tangy notes of grape and berries. Upon tasting, the cup delivered a rich blackcurrant juice flavor upfront, followed by vibrant notes of orange, dark plum, and blueberry. As the cup cooled, the fruitiness became even more pronounced, and a pleasant red wine finish emerged on the aftertaste.

Over the past decade, a coffee estate in Colombia has swept up over 60 awards at major global coffee competitions. Not just at elite international contests, but also at regional bean competitions such as those in Colombia and Panama. BOP As a result, insiders have dubbed this estate the “it girl” of the coffee world. And it is the star of today’s article from Front Street — Hopes Estate.

Before diving deep into Hopes Estate, it’s important to know that although it is indeed the name of an estate, when you see it on a competition leaderboard or ranking list, it doesn’t refer to just one farm. At such times, it represents a collective of several farms operating together under the unified name of Hopes Estate for competition and sales.

To understand how this came about, we have to go back to a Colombian couple, Blanca Ligia Correa and Juan Antonio Herrera. In their early years, they spent several years in assigned labor, during which time they were assigned to work at a farm called Posito. (Postosi) There, they began a new life.

After working there for a few years, the couple grew passionate about the coffee industry and decided to purchase the Posito farm outright, running it themselves — this became their first estate. Since the Posito farm mainly grew Typica, and Mr. Juan Antonio Herrera wanted to explore more possibilities, in 1945 the couple bought a new plot of land near the original farm, planting specially imported Yellow Bourbon, Red Bourbon, Caturra, and Typica.

This new estate was named Hopes Estate, symbolizing its potential for many possibilities. Over the course of their marriage and estate management, the couple had 14 children, effectively growing the family through their own efforts. Two of their children, Rigoberto and Luis, developed a strong interest in coffee cultivation. They delved deeper into the field, continuously learning and improving. Eventually, under their leadership, the family acquired three more estates: Margarita, Cerro Azul, and Hawaii.

The total area of the five estates is 150 hectares, with varying altitudes but generally ranging between 1400–1800 meters. Except for the Hawaii estate, all others are located in Colombia’s

Cauca region (the Hawaii estate is in Quindío). Cauca is located in the southwest of Colombia, with an average elevation of 1758m, reaching up to 2100m at its highest. Due to the region’s high average elevation, there is a significant diurnal temperature variation, which slows the growth rate of coffee plants. This allows the beans to absorb more nutrients and develop more outstanding sweetness and flavor profiles. 。

Additionally, the area enjoys abundant rainfall, suitable temperatures, and fertile volcanic soils, making it another coffee-growing “paradise.” With 150 hectares of land, it’s easy to imagine how productive Hopes Estate could be — and indeed it is. But at the time, it hadn’t yet made a huge splash, remaining just one of many coffee-growing families in Colombia. 。

That changed in 2007, when a bold move by Mr. Rigoberto elevated Hopes Estate to a whole new level.

In 2007, Mr. Rigoberto leased a coffee farm in Panama called La Cadereta. Under his management, it won the Panama BOP championship the following year.
Winning that award made him realize the importance of varietal genetics. Soon after, he brought Geisha back to Colombia and began experimenting with planting various other varieties, officially opening the door to Hopes Estate’s future success.

And as we saw at the beginning, in the years that followed, Hopes Estate racked up award after award, often taking home the top prize, becoming the “it girl” of the coffee world. Great — Front Street immediately sourced a batch of Hopes Estate beans to savor.

These beans come from the Margarita estate, a sub-farm under Hopes Estate, and are Natural-process Geisha. Due to the higher elevation at which they’re grown, Front Street adjusted the roasting curve slightly longer to ensure the beans fully express their flavors while avoiding underdevelopment. ‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍
