Ethiopia Geisha Village

A documentary filmmaker, Adam Overton, and his wife Rachel Samuel first encountered the coffee forest where Geisha was discovered while filming a coffee documentary for the Ethiopian government in 2007. The Overtons were captivated by Ethiopian coffee and dreamed of establishing their own farm. After consulting with coffee judges and advisors, they traveled to Bench Maji in 2011—the birthplace of Geisha—to explore the most original Geisha coffee.

With Willem Boot, a BOP judge, Adam searched for wild Geisha trees in the Gori Gesha forest and discovered wild Geisha coffee trees among the native coffee plants. After collecting seeds, they returned to Geisha Village to select and begin cultivating them. The couple established the nearly 500-hectare Geisha Village Coffee Estate near the Gori Gesha forest.

Geisha Village is located in a high-altitude, well-watered region with temperate climate and all key natural factors required to produce premium coffee. However, unlike many farms in Panama, Geisha Village cultivates three distinct Geisha varieties: Gori Gesha, Geisha 1931, and IIubabor Forest.

Most coffee production in Ethiopia comes from smallholder farmers with limited yields and processing facilities, but Geisha Village is a large-scale farm. The Overtons built their own wet processing mill and lab. The farm exclusively grows Geisha varieties. Drawing inspiration from standardized practices at Panamanian Geisha farms, they numbered and meticulously recorded each plot to facilitate future organization and flavor traceability.

Through the farm owner’s plot division, we can see that the western part of Geisha Village is planted at higher altitudes—especially the OMA, SURMA, and SHEWA-JIBABU plots, which range between 1900-2069 meters, with SHEWA-JIBABU having the highest average elevation. Shade cover is relatively denser on the southern side, while the northern side enjoys longer sunlight exposure. Among the farm’s eight plots, Adam selected the most suitable variety for each microclimate based on elevation, soil conditions, and shade variations to ensure unique flavor profiles across plots.

To ensure the consistent quality of Geisha coffee from Geisha Village, Adam implemented a strict grading system, categorizing Geisha into several tiers: Auction, Gold Label, Red Label, Green Label, and CHAKA.

Geisha Village · Gold Label Geisha Coffee

Gold Label Geisha from Geisha Village is frequently sourced by competition brewers and roasters with high quality standards. It accounts for about 10% of the farm’s annual yield and comes with detailed traceability information. The Gold Label batch purchased by Frontier reveals complex and rich flavors. Cupping highlights this batch’s charm—from the aromatic intensity of the dry fragrance to the lingering sweetness and aftertaste, leaving a lasting impression.

Traditional natural process

Leveraging its exceptional geographic advantages, Geisha Village primarily uses the natural processing method. Since the main harvest season runs from December to March—the dry season in the region with minimal rainfall—the farm can fully utilize this natural drying approach for coffee beans.

 Geisha Village Natural.jpg

Geisha Village’s traditional natural process involves spreading freshly harvested coffee cherries evenly on African-style raised beds, allowing them to bask in the sun evenly. The cherries are periodically turned to prevent over-fermentation and undesirable flavors. The drying period lasts approximately 21–40 days until moisture content drops to 12%, after which the dried beans are hulled. Decades of sun exposure also impart distinctive regional characteristics, yielding rich floral and tropical fruit aromas.

مقدمة المنطقة:

Ethiopia is located in a land full of wonders, and all the Arabica coffees we have or have not tasted originate here. Documented historical evidence of coffee in Ethiopia dates back to the 4th-5th centuries AD. At that time, due to wars between ethnic groups, coffee spread with people's conquests and migrations to Yemen on the Arabian Peninsula. Later, with the rise of the Ottoman Empire and the spread of Islam, through various circumstances, Europe began to have coffeehouses and the coffeehouse culture that gradually formed along with them. Subsequently, Central America began to cultivate coffee, and India and Indonesia in Asia began large-scale commercial coffee cultivation. Having gone through several hundred years in this way, we have only now arrived at today's third wave of specialty coffee.
